Diabetes type 1 is caused when the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood becomes too high. This happens when your body cannot produce enough of a hormone called insulin, which controls blood glucose. It is also often linked to being overweight or inactive or having a family history of diabetes type 2. You need daily injections of insulin to keep your blood glucose levels under control.
