What is Diabetes Type 1?

 

 

Diabetes type 1 is caused when the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood becomes too high. This happens when your body cannot produce enough of a hormone called insulin, which controls blood glucose.  It is also often linked to being overweight or inactive or having a family history of diabetes type 2. You need daily injections of insulin to keep your blood glucose levels under control.

Symptoms

 

  • Feeling very thirsty with a dry mouth
  • Urinating more frequently than usual, particularly at night
  • Feeling very tired or drowsy
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight gain with loss of muscle bulk
  • Persistent infections such as thrush

 

 

Extreme Symptoms

 

  • Eye problems leading to damaged vision (retinopathy)
  • Foot problems that can lead to amputation if untreated
  • Heart attack and stroke due to high sugar levels
  • Kidney problems (nephropathy)
  • Sexual problems in men and women

Diagnosis

 

HbA1C Test  (Insulin Resistance Levels) where the condition is determined following a mmol/mol blood test result:

 

  • 26 to 41 Normal (Not Diabetic)
  • 42 to 47 Pre Diabetic
  • 48+ Diabetic
